10th Annual Conference & Exhibits

September 22-24, 2010
Hyatt Regency
5 Embarcadero Center
San Francisco, California 94111

On September 22-24, 2010, Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) hosted its 10th Annual Conference & Exhibits at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, California. During the conference many changes took place… Dr. Michael Russell, orthopedic surgeon at Texas Spine and Joint Hospital in Tyler, Texas, was appointed President of the PHA Board of Directors for a two-year term. Brett Gosney, CEO of Animas Surgical Hospital, was named Immediate Past-President of the PHA Board of Directors on the expiration of his two-year Presidency. Paul Kerens, Senior Executive Officer of Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, was named President-Elect. Keri Bolte, PHA Member Services Manager, accepted the position as the interim executive director of PHA, effective December 1, 2010.

At the conference were nearly 60 exhibitors representing a broad range of medical equipment and services, as well as business sectors key to the construction, development, and management of physician hospitals. Also present were many corporate members, sponsors, and industry leaders, with a new all-time conference high attendance of nearly 430. The conference featured nearly forty break-out sessions covering topics that ranged from hospital operational issues to business operations, review of statistical studies, a range of clinical presentations, and future development models.

One of the two keynote addresses was delivered by Fred Lee, author of health care best seller, If Disney Ran Your Hospital, 9 1/2 Things You Would Do Differently, which has been awarded the 2005 Book of the Year Award by the American College of Healthcare Executives. Fred Lee has the unusual distinction of having been both a senior vice president of two major medical centers and a cast member at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. At Disney, he helped develop and facilitate Disney’s health care version of its 3-day seminar, Disney’s Approach to Quality Service, and a new seminar on Customer Loyalty. Our second keynote was provided by David Gratzer, MD, who is a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute’s Center for Medical Progress. His research interests include Medicare and Medicaid, drug re-importation and FDA reform. He is the author of the The Cure: How Capitalism Can Save American Health Care and Code Blue: Reviving Canada’s Health Care System, which was awarded the Donner Prize for best Canadian public policy book in 2000. He is also the editor of Better Medicine, a collection of essays from health care thinkers in Canada, the United States and Europe. Gratzer is a frequent contributor to the National Post and has contributed articles to The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, The Los Angeles Times, National Review and Time Canada. He received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba.
