Texas Spine & Joint Hospital Recognized as PHA Hospital of the Year Texas Spine & Joint Hospital (TSJH) in Tyler, Texas, has been recognized by Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) as the 2015 Physician Hospital of the Year.  Dr. R. Blake Curd, President of PHA, announced the award “[I]n recognition of your hospital’s exceptional quality, outstanding record of community service, and continued leadership in supporting our organization’s legislative priorities and grassroots initiatives.”

The award will be presented on Oct. 2, 2015 at the PHA Executive Summit in Napa, CA.  The award will be accepted by TSJH physician-owner Dr. Thomas Grahm, and CEO Tony Wahl.

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital maintains a stellar reputation and a sizeable local patient population, with a rapidly expanding state and national patient base.  With a continuing focus on patient safety and patient satisfaction, it has achieved impressive growth and national recognition in its first 12 years of operation.

One of the employee-nominators of TSJH, Deborah Pelton, R.N., said, “It has been my pleasure to serve as the Chief Nursing Officer for Texas Spine & Joint Hospital for the last nine years and to continue in this role through so many positive changes.  Our owners have found a unique and better way to care for our patients while creating a lovely and warm atmosphere for them and their families.  This has been reflected in our Five Star Medicare rating for patient satisfaction (HCAHPS) and 90th percentile-plus-ranking with Press Ganey for several years.”  The current ranking for the first quarter of 2015 is 93.5%.

Wahl says:  “We are indeed delighted to receive this national award, along with the recognition of our commitment to patient quality care and safety, patient satisfaction, and low infection rates.”  In 2014 the hospital earned a Gold Award from the Texas Medical Foundation Health Quality Institute for efforts in assuring timely preoperative antibiotic administration. “We are committed to providing the best outcomes for our patients”.

According to findings in the most recent Center for Medicare and Medicaid report, TSJH has had an infection rate that is less than 0.5% (the national rate is 2.8%) for the past nine years. TSJH is below both state and national averages for Medicare spending per patient, saving the government thousands of dollars.

One of the selection criteria for the award is in the area of community service.  Several surgeons at TSJH volunteer their time at Bethesda, a local medical clinic for the working poor, providing free imaging, pain procedures, and surgery.  The hospital’s major charity is United Way of Smith County, where its employees have been recognized as being the highest dollar contributors in the healthcare division.

Other recipients of the hospital’s time and resources are Junior Achievement, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Children’s Advocacy Center, East Texas Crisis Center, and the American Cancer Society.  Contributions are also made to scholarship funds at Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler.

“Not only is Texas Spine & Joint a leading hospital in the nation, its owners have dedicated their time and resources to fight for physician-ownership in the United States,” said Curd, “(former PHA President and TSJH physician-owner Dr. Michael) Dr. Russell and many other leaders from the hospital have been on the forefront of our issues. They have tirelessly worked to educate our local, state, and national legislators on the important differences in physician-ownership as well as share their data on the need for competition in the market-place that stops sky rocking costs while providing better care for Americans.”

John Richardson, PHA Executive Director said, “I am grateful and honored to award this to Texas Spine & Joint Hospital. There is no other entity that is more deserving - they have been true thought leaders and drivers in making care better for Americans.”
