Patients Favor Physician-Owned Hospitals, Congress Should Open Access

WASHINGTON, DC – Thirty-eight of fifty-seven hospitals identified by Becker’s Hospital Review as the Best Overall Patient-Rated Hospitals are physician-owned.  These results further confirm what proponents of physician ownership have long known: that physician-owned hospitals are among the best hospitals in the country in terms of patient satisfaction, quality of care and cost of care.  The performance is remarkable as physician-owned hospitals represent only about 5% of all hospitals in the United States.

“The recent data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) again demonstrates overwhelmingly that physician-owned hospitals are exactly the prescription healthcare needs to get well.  Congress must honor its promise to repeal Obamacare and the anti-competitive ban it enacted on the best hospitals in the country – those with physician ownership,” stated Dr. Blake Curd, President of Physician Hospitals of America (PHA).

This law – Section 6001 of Obamacare – stifles competition, restricts patient access, reduces quality, and raises costs for both patients and the Medicare system. Dr. Curd went on to say, “It is time for Congress to do what is right and stop cowering to the protectionist demands of the status quo and the special interests of the big hospital lobby.”

CMS quality programs, patient satisfaction surveys, and Medicare cost data all demonstrate that physician-owned hospitals are leading centers of excellence.

The thirty-eight physician-owned hospitals each received an overall care rating of either nine or 10 in 90% or more of their patients’ Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys, a patient satisfaction survey required to be administered by all hospitals nationwide by CMS.  According to Becker’s, this is in comparison to a national average of 72%.
